At the beginning of the 16th century, the rediscovery of Petrarch’s work and the enthusiasm for his Canzionere influenced poets and musicians, giving birth to a new genre : the madrigal. The program presented by the students of the department of early music of the Lyon CNSMD (Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon) is the result of a seminar led by Luc Coadou on the first madrigal collections published at the end of the 1530s.

Two short films by Charles Chaplin (USA - BW - 1917)
accompanied by 4 voices at the foot of the screen

« The Adventurer » / « Easy Street »

Les Voix Animées illustrate and ornament two short burlesque films by Chaplin in a quartet using melodies, refrains, onomatopoeias and vocal sound effects. More than just a musical accompaniment, the challenge of this show is to have two forms of creation coexist simultaneously and to present the movies of course but also the architects of their « soundtrack » performed live. This show, where the sound-effect singers and the unforgettable Charlot take turns in front of the stage, brings music and movies together in a ballet of shadows and lights.

On 31 October 1517, Martin Luther nailed his Disputation about the power of indulgences to the door of All Saints’ Church in Wittenberg : that was the starting point of the Reformation. In response, the Catholic Church summoned, between 1545 and 1563, a council in Trent. In this political and theological debate that left its mark on all the 16th century – and brought a form of modernity – aesthetics were not absent from discussion. Quite the contrary : it triggered some major changes in this field. These are the object of our concert, along with the interactions between aesthetics, politics and theology, with the purpose to shed light on the origins and the nature of the Missa Papae Marcelli composed in 1562 by Palestrina, at the time of the Council of Trent.

« Renaissance » is a fake conference but a true show : it plays around with the idea that the purity and the elegance of the 15th and 16th centuries’ polyphonic music are absolutely compatible with the scientific progress of the 21st centruy.

Thus, Les Voix Animées will tell you « Everything that you have always wanted to know on Renaissance music without ever daring to ask ».

In the middle of the 15th century, the Renaissance spread from Italy to all Europe. This was a deep transformation which touched painting, sculpture, architecture, litterature and music. The 15th century hosted a new world, rediscovered ancient art and thoughts and revolutionized the diffusion of knowledge with the invention of printing. In a time of changes, music asserted its « Orphic » nature and redefined its connection to poetry : « prima è le parole e poi la musica ». Euterpe and Erato danced to the same rhythm. Between shadow and light, Josquin, Lassus, Palestrina, Gesualdo, Monteverdi bring music to the sacred texts and to the poetry of the divine Petrarque with an equal delight.

Coming from a priori very different musical fields, the vocal ensemble Les Voix Animées - composed of 5 singers – and the electronic musician Christophe Demarthe each perform in their own world but meet and work together in the rendition of some medieval themes and some compositions by sound designer Christophe Demarthe. That is how a complete live soundtrack is created at the foot of the screen, on the masterpiece movie « The Passion of Joan of Arc », thus bringing some heritage significance along with a particularly contemporary and creative musical resonance.
